Common Name: Red-throated Loon
Description: Smallest, thinnest loon, but still relatively large, long-bodied swimming bird with sharp, upturned dagger-like bill. Red throat is only present in breeding plumage; breeds in far north latitudes. In winter, has white face and neck with gray head above eyes, dark upper parts with fine white dots. Thin, upturned dagger-like bill. Only loon that can take off on land.
