Common Name: Common Loon

Description: Large, long-bodied swimming bird with straight, dagger-like bill. Swims low in the water. Checkered black and white back in breeding plumage. Dark back and back of neck and head in winter with white in front of neck with an indistinct border between dark and light on neck. Similar to the Pacific Loon, but slightly larger. Swims underwater to catch fish, often swallowing fish under water.
