Description: Small diving duck-like bird with a dark, thin, straight bill. In the US, primarily seen in its winter plumage: dark above, white below, with a black cap to eye level. White wing patches seen in flight. In breeding plumage, neck is chestnut and has golden ear tufts. Red eyes.
