Common Name: American White Pelican
Description: One of the largest birds in North America. White with black primaries and a great orange-yellow bill (pinkish bill in non-breeding season and in juveniles) with extensible pouch. Often seen fishing in groups, where it scoops up fish while swimming. Flocks fly in lines, often gliding on thermals. In flight, reminiscent of a pterodactyl. Sometimes fishes cooperatively with several other white pelicans, circling an area to concentrate fish, and dipping heads under water simultaneously to catch the fish.
